I’ve individually highlighted two accomplishments — being profiled on NPR and having a photo in the Smithsonian — on the cover of this blog. They were fairly recent but, more than that, symbolize how I remade myself as a digital entrepreneur and multimedia journalist. I’ve also recently won a couple photography competitions and had an image run full page in Outdoor Photographer Magazine. I’m also proud that I founded HoopGurlz.com, which I sold to ESPN, and was a co-founder of Scout.com, which we sold to FOXSports.
Though I can be a bit shy about admitting success, I realize these days that it’s important to brand. Potential clients, employers and subjects also are curious about accomplishments. I don’t keep track carefully enough to offer a lot of details, though I do remember being the first sportswriter ever at The Seattle Times to win a national writing award, I think, in 1988. I’m also very proud of a first place for best website (HoopGurlz), specialized subject, in 2011 by SPJ and our being named finalist for an Online Journalism Award in 2007. The latter put HoopGurlz. I’m also especially proud of my award for Outstanding Beat Reporting from the Society of Environmental Journalists because I had just pivoted to writing about race and environmentalism.
Here’s a list, as best as I can remember, including where I was when I won them (I never counted the non-first-place awards in SPJ):
